This is a two-hour drawing of a model with a wonderful head. Very often I like working on the quick ones more than the longer ones.

My friend Kevin is sitting for me. This is about 16 hours, I'll probably spend another 16 hours on it.

This is my self portrait. I spent another day on it.


5th Hour

This is a 5-hour study I did of my friend, Mike, the last person I expect to be able to sit still for a minute. He turned out to be a terrific model and I had fun painting him. I wish I worked faster or had another hour. I took some photos during the process for him to see. They are from 4th Hour to 20 Min.

July Paintings and Older Studies

I started these 2 paintings/studies but half way through I decided to turn them into larger paintings/compositions and maybe change the composition of my self portrait. The still life is small 12x16 and the self portrait is about 20x28 now. I had started the self portrait on a larger canvas and placed me on the other side of the canvas. I'm reverting back to that composition or at least that's my plan for now. The colors in the self portrait are a bit too cool because I was painting under a hot light. I needed to bring the painting to the natural light periodically to look at it in order to see the colors that I was painting more accurately. I still need to warm it up, especially the shadow side where it's affected by the sun light coming in through the shades.

I found this study today. It was about 2 hours. He wears an expression I get when asking a family or friend to sit for a portrait.

Or they wear this contemplative expression. I didn't know he was contemplating his escape. This was supposed to be a study for a longer painting but he never came back.
